The best Fried Green Tomatoes

I adore preparing my tangy buttermilk battered crispy fried green tomatoes. It took me hours to try out several iterations before I discovered the ideal recipe. Each slice has a flawlessly crunchy exterior thanks to the crispy batter that is cooked onto it. The interior is succulent and has the perfect summer bite. At any dinner, these tomatoes are a unique and impressive dish!

Ingredients:

  1. 4 large green tomatoes, cut into 1/3-inch slices ($3.49)
  2. 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, divided ($0.07)
  3. 1/2 cup cornmeal ($0.38)
  4. 1 Tbsp BBQ rub powder, optional ($0.69 )
  5. 1 tsp salt, divided ($0.02)
  6. 1/2 tsp black pepper ($0.03)
  7. 1/2 cup buttermilk ($0.32)
  8. 2 eggs ($0.34)
  9. 1 1/3 cups canola oil* ($1.23)

Instructions:

Step:No:01

Slice the tomatoes horizontally into 1/3-inch pieces, eliminating the smooth bottom and the end with the stem.

Step:No:02

In a separate bowl, stir together 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup cornmeal, 1 tablespoon BBQ spice powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Mix by whisking.

Step:No:03

Transfer the remaining 1/4 cup flour by itself to a different small bowl.

Step:No:04

Whisk the eggs and buttermilk together in a third basin.

Step:No:05

Dip the chopped tomatoes in the flour, then the buttermilk egg mixture, and lastly the cornmeal BBQ seasoning combination, like you're on an assembly line. After every tomato slice has been dredged in this amazing trio, set it aside and carry on with this assembly line method!

Step:No:06

After your tomatoes have been dredged and set aside, place a thick-bottomed pan over high heat and fill it with canola oil until it's very hot! (Drip a little bit of water into the pan with your finger. It's time to fry the tomatoes if it pops and hisses as it lands.

Step:No:07

Using a spatula, carefully add 3–4 tomatoes, depending on the size of your frying pan, to the boiling oil. Give the tomatoes two to three minutes to fry in the shallow oil. Fry for about the same amount of time, or occasionally even a minute longer, on the other side.

Step:No:08

When the tomatoes are finished, remove them to a cooling rack or dish covered with paper towels to avoid leaving them submerged in extra oil.
